The Painter Fernando Campos uses the space of the blank screen as literature and theater. Its art is next the stage, histories and letters. A proper style in which the ink forms the workmanship of its life. Of its performance he is being made first feature film of Cinema de Poesia in which it interprets the Van Gogh in Antonin Van Artaud Gogh.

In 2006 one shorts of Cinema of Poetry called The Flower of the screen show its art as painter. In 2007 a poetry written for Fernando became foundation for the Réquiem of a muse.

João Gabriel – Composer of songs and poetry

Musician and composer of the Cinema of Poetry. Excellent artist for its sensitivity and potential of creation, João Gabriel Herculano composed all the musics of the feature film Antonin Van Artaud Gogh, on the life of the poet and dramaturgo Antonin Artaud, and of the painter Van Gogh, in phase of production.

All the scenes of the film had been recorded with its music being touched to inspire the actors, camera and all team. Currently it is in England to improve its knowledge and its experiences. João also contributes with its talent in a partnership in many Works. Its musics in the series Elevator were awardee in the X Brazilian Festival of University Cinema in 2005, series presented in a intinerante sample for all Latin America.

At João Gabriel orientation, Cristina Pinheiro and André Scucato composed the song Je suis Jean Cocteau, and the film has been nominated for a prize Best Film Art at the Portobello Film Festival Awards Ceremony, at Tuesday 21st August at The Electric Cinema, 191 Portobello Road from 2pm and the event will finish at 5pm.

In the new short of Poetry Cinema (Requiem of a muse – 2007) the excelent composition Perfidez created by João Gabriel its fantastic. The short pass in the The New York International Independent Film and Video Festival and in the Porto Bellofilm Festival (England).

In the short Abyss of soul, the tree songs composed by João Gabriel Herculano was essencial for the both awards the film received. (Best video art by jury popular at v Festival de Video Guaçuano, and Best Photography at 2 national Festival of Colatina, Brazil).

With talent and rare sensibility for a musician of its age its contribution is essential for the development of our cinematography of art in Brazil. Its music is a personage, or an architecture where the colors are placed and carried through the movement of cameras.

The Cinema de Poesia, since 2004, carries through of independent ways, music, paints, literature, plays and cinema, divulging the art and the artists. Studies in the theory and the practical a meta-art.

In this brief trajectory it was possible to take a little of the art more than and its interlacements. The works they had been shown in 20 countries with 90 selections in international festivals. To the all 53 shortnesss produced in three years.

In the brazil, we pass for censorship and a difficult time, where it only has financing in cinema for who speaks on violence, sex, poverty and soccer. Exactly with all the difficulties and without no sponsorship, we continue to make and to divulge the art, therefore we know of its importance and we must it our existence.

About Cinema de Poesia

It was during the first 20 years of the cinema, at the same time as the development of the classical narrative, that the formatoin of important moviments of vanguard as the German Expressionism and the French Avant Garde were noticed. During this time, for a movie to be ackowneldged as art, its capacity of expression as well as of dissociation from the daily routine of the world needed to be prooved. Grifth was already bold on the backgrounds and in his language, bringing literature and cinema closer together.

To Andre Bazin, who was against the emphasis given to the formal aspects of image, what was interesting was the fact that his technique wouldn’t erase the “poetics of reality”. To the Soviet Serguei Eisenstein, the poetics of the cinema was on the production of anthitesys within the filmic level, using images – at a first moment of different semantic fields – in the search for shock by strangeness, by the breaking of the classical narrative of the convencional movies.

Not long after that, the poet and painter Jean Cocteau composes Le Sang Du’n Poète (Blood of a poet), the innaugural work of Cinema de Poesia, in 1927. Dreyer with La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc (The Passion of Joan of Arc) with the brilliant presentation of Falconetti and Antonin Artaud in 1929 is able to do poetry in the cinema as only a few writers had done so far. Artaud, a poet, actor, paintor and a genius of art was aware of what was to do cinema. He once said that poetry was not beyond but before the images. When it hit the spirit, his disaggregating strengh fell apart. There was definately poetry around the objective, but before the taping by the objective, before the inscription over the pellicle.

However, Renner Clair is a poetry cinema in its pure state, shown as an entre-act of a ballet dance. Few artists were able to, in such a criative way, compose an artistic metaphore about cinema with such a subtlety.

Un perro Andaluz (A dog from Andalusia), from Luis Bunuel, a landmark of the surrealist cinema, gained more room for the trying of other narratives at a conference done by Bunuel called Cinema: an instrument of Poetry, given at the University of Mexico in 1953. There he presented the basis for his proposal and pointed out his objectives towards movie making, something that was capable of transcending the tangible world and would show to the audience a, so far, unkown universe, covered by the daily perception of things.

Other poets such as Andrei Tarkovski sculpeted time in the cinema, going from painting, photography and poetry to compose their art. Krzysztof Kieslowski with his trilogy Bleu, Blanc e Rouge inserts synesthesia to the sound, personifies the collors and composes a work full of meta-art and poetry. Peter Greenaway, with his encyclopedic cinema, recognizes cinema as limited to one area and searches for another form of the cinematographic narrative, just like Joel Pizzini and Julio Bressane, contemporary movie makers who try to sketch a cinema in other narratives, following the cinepoetics of Glauber Rocha. In this country it’s needed to remember the poetic prose of Humberto Mauro in the origin of our cinema and the masterpiece Limite (Limit), the only movie from Mario Peixoto.

In the 60’s, in the book Empirismo Eretico (Heretical Empirism), the Italian poet and moviemaker Píer Paolo Pasolini cretaed the term Cinema of Poetry; that served to caracterize productions that aimed for amplitude in the space of the artist’s expression within the cinematographic narrative. What interests us, just as it interested Pasolini, is the poetic character of the cinema as art, exploring the limits of the coventional narrative, not fitting into the program of the vanguard movements and experimentalism, searching for the exploration of the form by the form. There is nothing new in what we do. We just put all the oldies of art together with hands sweting from metaphores and sensations.

We agree with Peter Greenaway and state categorically that we still haven’t seen any kind of cinema, but 105 years of illustrated text. The cinema doesn’t have a specification in format (35mm x digital), what generates so much discussion among the professionals of the area, neither in what is projected today on the screen. In Brazil, the Seventh Art either pictures the literary work of last century or the one before the last, in an audiovisual way, or it transcribes the scenic staging to the dark rooms. Hence, a semicolon is necessary;

The pure Cinema is a mistake, as Artaud used to say. As it is a mistake, in any art, to think it as an objective means of representation. Two thousand years ago Aristotles said that art is the mimetic representation of reality. Semicolon.

This is a pause for reflexion that intends, in the origin of arts, to poetize it in every sense proposing a meta-art, in the search for sub-texts, in every sense and direction, in the deconstruction and construction of a poetic dialogue with the objective of recomposing the primitive unit of art, what as unit, multiplies in the synesthesia of senses, in this effort to separate human comprehension from racionalization of logics.

Just as the construction of a sub-text is necessary to the actor – destroying with alliteration every form and space of the writing, this flooring noticed at a first reading that hides the damned theatrical representation within the trap-doors of the text – music as a note has to be deconstructed. What is a piano if not a stage where, coreografically, two bailarina hands dance extracting from each silable-key the poetical literature of the sonority? And this sonority (more especifically its personification) that acts as a character-director, not only of the movement of the image but also of its form and color? The camera as a caligrafic writing that uses the bodily dance of the photographer that, syncronyzed with the rithym of the dance, transports the body of the photograph to, further ahead, and extract the texture and the naked figure of a picture in moviment from the image! This art in transition that originates the paint that, in the cinematographic montage will serve one more time as text and sub-text, ready to once again walk in between the rewriting of the scenic interpretation, of the musical sub-texts, of the movement of the dance in the formation of this synesthetic ballet of colors and shapes?

Still, there are much more songs and poetic spaces in display that all we need to do is to take them with this naive we-know-you-are-there look, as The Nerve Meter (O Pesa-Nervos) or Nenúfares waiting for the harvest of the poetry for their exhibition, be it on the screen, be it in paint, be it in dance, photography or in fine arts. All this reconstruction movement composes the meaning and the sensation of the Cinema of Poetry, this interval, this pause, and this entre-act between what is thought to be Cinema and what really constitutes it.

We say it again. We do no know Cinema, but we know how to feel it. And in this poetic search the more you stray from what you know today as Cinema, maybe the closer you are from finding its especificity as art.

Cristina Pinheiro
An actress, director and interpreter of the verse. She graduated from CAL (Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras), and has acted as an authentic form of her own representation in different shows. Since 2000, Cristina has been working as a theater director. For almost four complete seasons she has worked in picking verses for this Cinema de Poesia, directing non-actors, actors and objects. In the direction of art, script, camera, production… wherever one looks Cristina multiplies. Nowadays she works on the first feature of Cinema de Poesia, Antonin Van Artaud Gogh. Her line of research has as a foundation the art-goal, where she is strongly influenced by the poet, actor, and dramatist Antonin Artaud.

Andre Scucato
A poet, language researcher, studies poetry applied to all arts. Together with Cristina Pinheiro, he has produced 50 short movies and two documentaries. Andre works as a journalist doing documentaries and TV shows for the Brazilian television. As a journalist, he works for TV Educativa do Brasil. He has written eight books, two plays, and many songs for the movies and television. A teacher of cinematographic montage, Andre works as a consultant in the area of new technologies and does research on artistic language. He has as his main study the work of Jean Cocteau, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Antonin Artaud, Van Gogh, Tarkowski and Kielowski.
